Tale of Genji

We braved the train to Ishiyama to see Ishiyamadera Temple... one of the oldest Buddhist temples in Japan ... AND where Lady Murasaki is said to have written the Tale of Genji! It happens to be the millenial celebration of one of the greatest and oldest works of literature. There was a whole museum dedicated to depictions of the story by great artists through the centuries and one of her original scrolls from approx. 1004 ad. For 500 yen a really cute lady dressed me up like Lady Murasaki. Usually I don't go for dressing up stuff for photos, but I liked this one!

This is Mike's favorite photograph of the beautiful grounds at Ishiyamadera.

After exploring the temple we ate a traditional temple lunch, called shojin ryori, which is a simple vegetarian meal of bean soup, vegetable and salty seaweed. Yum! It was good to eat after all the noodles and rice we've been ingesting!
