Umbrellas are used here for sun protection. You see them everywhere you look. Japanese fans are also in heavy use. I always thought they were just decorative, but NO, they are purely functional. The heat here can be quite unbearable. I don't think I've been dry since I stepped off the plane!
To truly fit in, one must also invest in a small piece of cloth on which to wipe your hands after washing. There are no paper towels here... You see men whip these out of their pockets all the time to wipe the sweat from their faces. I've even seen people just wearing them on top of their heads! (The hand-wiping cloth is what I'm illustrating in the second photo...)

asian peeps are like that everywhere (i think) with sun umbrellas. it's why they hardly have wrinkles and i will have sooooo many one day. >_<
ps you don't look sweaty or otherwise bad in that photo, you look cute & happy!
